I definitely wouldnt say Darwin was a genius. He was certainly smart, but ideas about evolution and natural selection can be found in the writings of ancient greece. That doesn't mean he didn't discover it independently though. But lets save the title of genius for figure heads like Newton, Gauss, Schroedinger, Einstein, etc…
Even if Darwin hadn't discovered evolution he still would have been the most productive biologist in history. His other works are staggering.
Stating that Darwin is a great genius is more a political than scientific statement.
Dennett is a genius. I love his books
