Minimalism

The Art of Photography

This weekend I’m headed to Marfa, TX. Why?

The main reason is Donald Judd. Judd is one of the leading minimilist artists from the 1970’s and 1980’s. While working in New York City, he started purchasing property in West Texas to display his large scale environmental works. Today, Chinati features works by Judd as well as Dan Flavin, Claes Oldenberg and Robert Irwin.

I’m going to be vlogging my trip over the next few days. But before I do we need to discuss minimalism.

  1. I've thankfully had the chance to see a Judd piece in person. It was one of the wall-mounted pieces with colored acrylic or glass on the top and bottom of each box. It is honestly one of the most interesting pieces of art I've ever seen. There is just this incredible interplay between form and space that no photo can capture. I would recommend that anyone who has a museum nearby them with a Judd work or two should check it out as soon as they are able to.

  2. The NEX-7 is still one of my most favorite cameras, the Tri-Navi was genius, but but they had limited it's impact by not allowing full customization of buttons and dials, I've been dreaming of a FF NEX-7 since it came out.

  3. Each generation art more “minimalistic”, I think we end with “Stone Age” culture, in photography same, people shooting windows, eyes, glasses and call it “photography”.

  4. Whoever wrote that nonsense starting at about 1:30 that Ted was reading had no intention of anyone understanding it, or cared if they lied and said they did. It would have been easier if the author just wrote that Judd was an art snob and wanted to be left alone.

  5. My first time I drove with friends from Los Angeles to New Orleans we went through Marfa. I think it took an extra two days. Ahh memories. Enjoy your trip. I can't wait to see the pics. Does that work with the original mavic pro?

  6. Hey Ted- Great… now I’m going to have to look for your Sony NEX-7 videos!
Any cost ideas what Sony will charge me for the same Camera Conversion to remove the two filters from my NEX-7? I like the idea of adding the filters externally! Keep #Crushingit 🔥📷

  7. Contact Craig Rember if you want to learn more about Donald Judd. A friend of mine from college who managed the estate.

  8. No film camera? Kind of a downer, but you can’t bring everything. Enjoy the road trip…Erik should get to experience some amazing bbq in the little out of the way towns.

  9. Hope you have a great experience! But please, do not ever read that stuff from your mobile phone about Judd again. What a load of horseshit – lots of high falutin words that say nothing except, "I, the writer, am smarter than the rest of you poor cultureless, heathen." 😉

  10. Do not forget Marfa Prada. I'm headed that way from Tulsa in April to mostly shoot the stars and abandoned buildings. Can't wait to see your images.

  11. Ted, when you're in Marfa, you should definitely go check out the MacDonald Observatory at night (you need to buy a ticket in advance), on the weekends (and possibly during the week, I'm not sure), they do "star shows" with an astronomer pointing at constellations, star clusters etc. AND you get to look at all of this as well as the Milky Way, not only with your own eyes, but also through telescopes! The observatory is in the mountains about 30 min north of Marfa. It's definitely worth the look!
