The Abstract Expressionist movement that transpired in New York City in the 1940’s represents strength through the emotion that emerged into art, inspired by the unthinkable tragedies occurring within that time period. In an attempt to cope with the irrationality of destructive human behavior, artists such as Pollack, Rothko and de Kooning expressed their emotion through their work. It was not subject matter, but gesture that conveyed emotion, such as Pollack’s angry splatters, or the stillness that Rothko’s work transmitted. The painful events of the period inspired an expressive artistic period of hope for the re-birth of a new civilization full of collaboration and social awareness.

Time to start making room for new abstract artists who keep the movement alive. Im not saying get rid of the rich collection of art at MOMA, but start looking away from NY for art of this kind. Where did all these artists come from who are in and are shown regularly at MOMA? Certainly not from NY. This country has thousands of new and much better artists than those of the past. Its true. Only no one wants to put in time to find these new artists. And stop all rich artists shit, artists must pay for exhibitions shit. Thats crap these day. Piss on MODERN ART.

First and foremost abstract expressionism is not just New York City it was being done on the west coast at the same time, it is American as it is universal. Certain aspects of art can never be claimed in one place. Most of these artists that worked in the abstract expressionism movement came form from war-torn areas, they were not from America. Most of these artists who worked in America at this time in the 40s and 50s were coming from countries who were having problems inside their own countries, and finding the great place to work in America New York just happened to be a place where they could all collectively come to. New York being the universal gateway into America….usually where most people entering the country would go first. Most would stay, but that does not mean abstract art was New York and New York's alone that would be ridiculous to say.
