Noam Chomsky: Language, Cognition, and Deep Learning | Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast

Lex Fridman

Noam Chomsky is one of the greatest minds of our time and is one of the most cited scholars in history. He is a linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, historian, social critic, and political activist. He has spent over 60 years at MIT and recently also joined the University of Arizona. This conversation is part of the Artificial Intelligence podcast.

As I explain in the introduction, due to an unfortunate mishap, this conversation is audio-only. Hope you still enjoy it and find it interesting.

  2. Was watching a movie & someone was like: "yo turn off that youtube video take ur ear buds out & watch this movie with me…"
& I showed then the screen & said it was paused!

  3. Create a better world?… What is better for one is not so much better for some. Unfortunately we are all unique individual beings with different ideas of life with different desires, some are happy living content with nature and the creation that is already here, some see the magic in simple things in life like holding the hand of a loved one or baking a cake… Was creating the atom bomb creating a 'better' world? I think not… More suffering than ever… Now we all live under the threat of nuclear wars… Better world?… Something to consider. One mans idea of a better world is not so much a better world for others. Some humans have emotional intelligence some have high IQ's, some are psychopathic, some are simple. What works for 'one' may not work for everyone. Many of our lives are way beyond google and facebook and far away from APP world. Many of us have so much meaning and connection to the current world, we don't need a virtual one.

  4. Wow. I'm so awed by Lex Fridman… many reasons… to put it in a nutshell: by his (so unexpected) humble approach to life. Kudos and a big thank you for letting us see your attitude, fore sharing your mind and abilities, … and, of course, this podcast project.

  5. Particularly interesting, the discussion about engineering vs science. I love Chomsky's point that science discovers/learns the nature of the system. With this point, Chomsky has shown that the Pharmaceutical industry typically does not engage in science. Rather it engineers interventions for symptoms of (chronic disease) without understanding (or acknowledging) the nature of the system. It claims scientific credibility through the rigor of randomized trials. This is an illusion, a deception, a fraud as the nature of the system is fundamentally ignored.
Interesting, also, the discussion about good and evil. I just finished reading Richard Wrangham's book – The Goodness Paradox: The Strange Relationship Between Violence and Virtue in Human Evolution. I can highly recommend it.
    Excellent podcast, BTW. Thanks Lex.

  6. I can’t give you enough likes for this interview. Noam Chomsky is one of the most brilliant and inspiring persons I’ve ever come across. Thank you for the great questions you asked, too!

  7. Listening to your podcast i realize that the vast majority of people who call themselves data scientists are in fact simple data engineers. Puf the science vanishes after reflecting on Noam’s comments. Great deep thoughts through the whole interview. Keep doing this

  8. A great listen! I’ve lost count of how many Chomsky interviews I’ve listened to. This one is up there with some of my favorites!!! Thank you Alex! 🙏🏾 And of course THANK YOU NOAM CHOMSKY!!!🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

  9. 16:46 question regards to neurolink …. wow, is elon wasting his time? Lex ur questions flow like water demanding a factual and true answer , Noam is a true great but given a true look into projects such as neurolink , how would his intellect react and express to it? Get him on the team, also lex why are you not on the team at nuerolink ?! Haha

  10. Is it possible we were seeds planted here on earth by an intelligent species of human from another planet.
    Thinking about like superman.
Our language speaks in words of expression of ones needs.
We dont need a voice to communicate with understanding of what a dog is telling us when the dog wags his tail, or a cat is purring.
What does the word fuck mean if you don't understand the context or the human voice input?

Do you speak a language when you are dreaming or does your understanding of the language is allowing you to understand the dream?

When a person stumps ones toe and cusses. The words spoken have no meaning only crying out in pain?

When an argument between husband and wife. The wife yells out i hate you does she hate or crying out her pain?

Tyyping thissss withhjj missing spells cannnn you stil undrstad the messssage of what im talking abot?

We are all born brand new. Only after time are we taught more by watching others teaches us with words.
Watching a father hit the mother or seeing someone reacting to a situation at 2 years old when our brains are a dry sponge soaking up information as a sponge soaking up water.

Whpuld you feel like same way as you do if you lost the memory of everything bad that happened in your life?

I believe the purpose of life is almost like a test to see how we treat each other.

  11. I have been waiting for someone in the AI research space to speak with Chomsky, he is one of the great minds in linguistics.
I have long believed that in order to accomplish a human centric AGI, natural language will need to be at the foundations core.
