Semiotic perceptions in mental health | Brian Higgins | TEDxSaltLakeCity

TEDx Talks

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Utilizing emotional connection and communication through everyday objects, Brian tells us about how using semiotic techniques can create real change in the stigma of mental health. Looking beyond to find hidden help.

Inspiring mental wellness while utilizing creativity as a tool for emotional expression and applying creative aspects as a complementary therapy, Brian has found a way to guide himself and others in understanding emotion by visualizing a perspective outside of the context of adverse situations. After his pivotal realization that he was using film to understand and cope with conflict based PTSD and addiction from his time growing up in Northern Ireland surrounded by the terrorist troubles, he’s since endeavored to offer a turning point to others through creative and emotional innovation by starting Create Reel Change and finding ways to make things better to help people. Currently he is working with veteran’s issues, addiction, suicide and depression. He helps people tell their stories through emotional expression, mostly with film and cooking, and breaks down barriers and stigma that have been built up around mental health, which gives people a fresh new voice in an innovative “bridge building” way.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) .
