The AI Economy’s New Career Ladder

CNBC

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the labor market but the shift is not limited to software engineers and office workers. As demand grows for data centers, fiber networks and other digital infrastructure, AT&T CEO John Stankey told CNBC the company needs more technicians, electricians and other skilled workers who do not necessarily need four-year degrees. CNBC spoke with 24-year-old AT&T technician Kyson Cook in Kettering, Ohio to explore how the AI boom could create new career paths for young workers.

  1. What a great, positive kid. Whenever I see comments bemoaning the high cost of college, I ask if they considered working for a company that offers tuition reimbursement. I’ve heard all kinds of excuses why they couldn’t. Refreshing to see this young man took that route and has zero student debt. Way back in the day, I went that route and it worked out well for me. This young man already has a house, a family and a future.

  2. We just need to be more human, and just really have a true connection to a community. People will do their best if they have an assurance that the people they are working with all respect and value each other.

  3. Yeah they'll need you for 2 or 3 years while they build the AI data centers. Then, once the projects are done they'll kick you to the curb, and you'll be competing with a mass group of recently unemployed peers for whatever jobs are left over.

  4. They lied. They said AI hasnt shown up in the job market numbers. People are struggling to just find basic entry jobs because companies fired people and decided to use AI. The job market is tight right now.

  5. There is a huge potential to the use of Ai for creative and intellectual work. Unfortunately the education system in U.S. churns out mediocre minions, not someone proud of their intellectual knowledge or skillset.
That said, there is no limit on use of localized Ai for individual prosperity, if one already posses the needed multi-domain knowledge and a diy mindset. Just some 💭

  6. A.I. will destroy this 👍 world (again). 🤓 🚬 ☕ I really cannot stand AT&T either. (Great Reset) 10,000 traitors, , uhm , , I mean 'technicians' to take out the grid for yuh! College was a scam, yeah…. 💻

  7. I work with high-school kids, AI is the tool to cheat, meaning future generations will be as smart as kindergarten kids 15 years ago. AI is destroying the world in more ways than you think.

  8. This does feel like an ad for AT&T, but i would still show this to my alternative school students. Kyson has a solid personal story to tell.

  9. Meanwhile I’m an Project/Operations Manager with a background in Trust & Safety, and Production Management who’s been trying to work for AT&T retail, corporate, etc. since my early 20’s…I’m mid 30’s now….🫩

  10. You could have told the same story with somebody who joined the military and then used their education funding to get their degree. The key point is that people need a solid goal for their education.

  11. Funny hearing how the majority of jobs aren't classroom worthy training….yet to even have a conversation with an AT&T employer for an interview, you will first be sat in a classroom and tested for hours…

  12. John has an MBA from UCLA, a top 30 business school, downplaying college 😳

Let's be honest, not even 50% of the United States population has a four-year degree 🙄

  13. I find it interesting how, growing up, I was told to go to college to get a good job by people who never went to college. Fast forward 20 years, and multiple CEOs with college degrees are questioning the value of a college degree.

The top 7 Business Schools have their placement because of their support in job placement and in expanding students' professional networks.

  14. Props to him for being happy, but don't let this Ad distract you from the need for socialism in this K-shaped economy. There's nothing companies would like more than to lay off people because of AI and keep people like the guy in the video at the lower end of the economy. It's do or die young people.

  15. WE ALL SEE IT.!! CEO… GREAT OPPORTUNITY- 170K Management… RECRUIT NOW. CEO.. THIS WILL NOT CHANGE.. 90% of OUR POSITIONS— WOW…. #1 ""SHARE HOLDERS MATTER" ALWAYS..

  16. The idea that one hates school but still expects to make a good living comes across to me as highly suspicious. Any job that pays well requires learning. One is not going to gain fundamental skills and knowledge purely through "hands-on".

  17. Since 250 years ago Industrial Revolution started, every few decades, the work force had to re-adjust to embrace the next revolution, lotus 123 won’t eliminate accountants as expected but increasing demand of more accountants, steam engines won’t eliminate “horse riders” who shifted to “trunk drivers”, AI won’t eliminate “junior developers” who could shift to “system orchestrators”. Enjoy the true learning which starts after graduation.
