A series of cross-disciplinary panels will bring insight to the exhibition-research Abstract Art in the Age of New Media (https://www.mocda.org/abstract-art-new-media) from the 1st to 4th March 2021.

MoCDA will welcome artists from the show to discuss space and aesthetics with art professionals and neuroscience researchers.

Topics include Creating Abstract Works in the Digital Age (March 1st, 6 PM GMT), How Virtual Environments and Scenography Affect our Perception of Art (March 2nd, 6 PM GMT), The Future of Museums in the Digital Realm (March 3rd, 6 PM GMT) and What can cognitive science bring to museums and artists? (March 4th, 4 PM GMT).

What can cognitive science bring to museums and artists?” will be the fourth chapter of the series of four panels organised by MoCDA, UCL and Hobs3D to discuss the relationship between space and aesthetics.

Helmut Leder (University of Vienna) is one of the world experts in the psychology of aesthetics. Maurice Benayoun (Hong Kong) has adopted a behavioural perspective and neuroscientific techniques in his artistic work. Chantal Eschenfelder (Frankfurt) has opened the doors of the Stadel Museum to several collaborative projects with cognitive scientists. Each speaker will talk for about 10 minutes about his/her experience, followed by a general discussion to share perspectives around the role that cognitive science can have in shaping the future of museums and art.

Serena Tabacchi, director of the Museum of Contemporary Digital Art (MoCDA), will first introduce the talk series on Space and Aesthetics. The panel will then be moderated by Dr Mariana Babo-Rebelo, neuroscientist at UCL and leader of the scientific project. The public will have the opportunity to send questions via the live chat.

  1. What a wonderful set of presentations these were – thanks to Dr Babo Rebelo for putting together a wonderful group of speakers! Makes one want to dash into a museum & reflect on one's esthetic experiences. Ironic in a way also: COVID-19 has necessitated that we look at artworks & exhibitions online for the moment… but at the same time it has allowed us also to enjoy such lovely offerings such as this one on YouTube…
