Why We Need Engineers Now More Than Ever | Elanor Huntington | TEDxSydney

TEDx Talks

Elanor Huntington argues that now more than ever we need engineers – as they are the ones who bring together people, technology and society, if only engineers could do better at explaining what they do. A compelling talk that argues that not only do we need to redefine engineering, we must also encourage a broader participation in the field, if we are going to be prepared for the future.

Elanor Huntington was appointed the Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science in June 2014, and is the first female Dean of Engineering at the Australian National University. Huntington is committed to growing the profile of Science and Technology in the community and is passionate about attracting more young women to take up careers in STEM related fields. She previously held the position of Head of School of the School of Engineering and Information Technology at UNSW Canberra at the Australian Defence Force Academy.

Huntington holds a PhD (2000) in experimental quantum optics from the ANU. From early 1999, she spent 18 months at the Defence Science and Technology Organisation working in science policy. Professor Huntington’s current research interests are in the control of quantum systems, with a particular interest in the interface between theory and applications. She is also a program manager in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

  1. Do not limit Mechanical Engineers by building cars and automobiles to take people from point A to B. Totally wrong. Mechanical Engineers provide energy solutions to the world by building smart energy systems. We gave the world an opportunity to look into our solar system neighbours by building smart liquid fuel rocket systems who take astronauts into space by defeating 9.81 m/s^2 strong earth gravitional field. Mechanical Engineers even gave the world the prize problem of the grand unified theory (GUT)of the universe, which Albert Einstien left the problem to solve for mechanical engineers. Modern satellites, plane auto pilot systems, war fare missile technological systems, modern bullet railway systems, flying cars, drone technology, medical robotic surgical systems, nano technology etc. They all have one thing in common. They all emerged from Mechanical Engineering. In other words Mechanical Engineering controls the driving technological engine of our world. All our decorated physicists, scientists of the world are mostly mechanical engineers. Total respect to other engineering fields. Every one has tge right to choose a field of choice. There is a reason that Mechanical Engineering is more complicated field of all other engineering simply because it fully controls the world around us. All other branches of engineering stem out from Mechanical Engineering. Aeraunatical engineering, robotics, Control systems, electrical etc all have roots in Mechanical Engineering. So it is up to the industry how they want to take use of mechanical engineering. During the first and second industrial revolution they used mechanical engineering by building horsepower railway engines, cars, coal power plants etc. But this time in the fourth industrial revilution the industry simply have to merge all glorious section of mechanical engineering such as robotics, advance control systems, rebewable energy systems, electrical systems in electro-mechanical systems to survive. In simple words this is perhaps the best time to be a mechanical engineer. So please next time if you want to limit the fascinating wonderful field of Mechanical Engineering simply by defining automobiles to take you from point A to B please read my comment. I understand you took the field of engineering later in your life so I understand.
