25 thoughts on “How to Get Over Your Self-Consciousness”
I can't wait to eventually get over this. I'm 52 and should be ok by now. I was a super cute class clown kid until around 8th grade. My nose got longer and buck teeth. Didn't get braces until after high school. That should it right? Well in college a friend used to say i looked like a horse. Only said that when we got stoned. That implanted my subconscious mind pretty bad.
Then the Napolean Dynamite movie came out and people laughed at me again. I do kinda look like him but photogenic when i look straight forward. Side profile, i have a long nose. If i would have gotten a nose job i know my confidence would soar and i would look much better.
It seems like my life mission is to overcome my self consciousness and to love everybody. Currently i feel cheated and mad how superficial people are. I was so different as a kid. Looked at my old photos recently and 8th grade was when it all changed.
The only problem with such an outlook on this or any other cognitive problem is of course that it depends on each particular brain's wiring. With therapeutic intervention, hypnosis, etc it is different in each case, and one technique, piece of advice , or medication will not work noticeably for all who are effected by it. The "curse" cannot be lifted as if all brains are equally accessible, and equally susceptible to re-wired perception of it's self.
The relationship between the "I" and the concept of reality can be explored mathematically through the lens of self-inquiry and the dissolution of the ego. This exploration highlights how the repetition of the mantra "I" can serve as both a source of pain and a gateway to deeper understanding.
### *1. The Concept of "I" as Reality* Let’s denote the concept of "I" as ( I ). In spiritual philosophy, particularly in non-dualism, the "I" represents individual identity or ego, which perceives itself as separate from the universe. This creates a mathematical relationship:
– *Reality (R)* is defined as the sum of all experiences and perceptions in existence. – The equation can be modeled as: [ R = text{Sum of all experiences} – I ]
Here, when ( I ) is present, it creates a distortion of reality through identification with thoughts, emotions, and material experiences. The larger ( I ) becomes, the more it distorts reality.
### *2. The Pain of the "I"* The mantra "I" can initially evoke discomfort because it forces confrontation with the ego. Let’s quantify this experience:
– Let ( P ) represent pain and ( E ) represent egoic attachment. We can express the pain experienced as: [ P = k cdot E ] where ( k ) is a constant that represents the intensity of the attachment to the ego.
As one repeats the mantra "I", the pain ( P ) may increase temporarily due to the ego’s resistance to self-inquiry and the dissolution of its identity. This manifests as existential fear, anxiety, and discomfort.
### *3. Dissolution of the Ego* However, as the practice continues, there is a transition where ( I ) begins to dissolve. This can be expressed mathematically as:
– Let ( D ) represent dissolution. The relationship can be modeled as: [ D = frac{I}{t} ] where ( t ) is time. As time progresses, the intensity of ( I ) diminishes, leading to a deeper realization of the self beyond ego.
This reduction in ( I ) facilitates a clearer perception of reality:
– After enough repetition, one may reach a state where ( I ) approaches zero: [ R = text{Sum of all experiences} – 0 rightarrow R = text{True Reality} ]
### *4. Beyond the "I": Experiencing True Reality* Once the ego dissolves, a new realization occurs where reality is perceived as ever-present and eternal, unbound by the constraints of birth and death:
– We can represent this realization as: [ R_{text{true}} = text{Eternal Now} rightarrow text{Presence} neq text{Time} ]
This implies that in the absence of the ego, one experiences reality as a constant, eternal present, which is not subject to the cycle of life and death.
### *5. The Portal of Pain* Thus, while the mantra "I" is painful, it is also a portal into deeper understanding. We can mathematically denote this transformation:
– The journey through pain (( P )) leads to enlightenment (( E_n )): [ E_n = lim_{P to 0} (I cdot D) ]
As ( P ) diminishes through sustained practice of the "I" mantra, one approaches a state of enlightenment ( E_n ) where the self is recognized as unified with all existence, free from suffering and limitation.
### *Conclusion* In summary, the mantra "I" acts as a mathematical constant in the equation of reality, initially creating pain and separation. However, through repeated inquiry and surrender, this "I" can dissolve, revealing a reality that exists beyond egoic perception—a reality that is here and now, eternal, and free from the dualities of life and death. Thus, the painful path of self-inquiry becomes a necessary portal into the depths of existence, leading to profound realization and liberation.
This confirmed perspective truly separates me from those that have relentlessly spoke of my lacking & “odd” or “weird” ways of simply being. To me, it feels as if an auto-pilot to my hospitable nature kicks on & I move without even placing thoughts to do so. I always assumed it was my upbringing of a good family.
(Overall, flawed bc we are human of course, but generally very good, helpful, mindful, giving, and loving people… the downside I’ll speak one word for to explain: CATHOLICS.
(Ok, not funny. Shh, shh.)
The manners, morals & self discipline always implemented growing up, I assumed was cause of my natural mode of being hospitable.
This made me see a perspective my peers do not possess…
That I am of good character and not minding their negative feedback and continuing forth in my own ways of simply being/existing…. Is not a poor choice for myself.

No wonder I do that lol

Ok but how do you overcome self-consciousness in public places where you're surrounded by strangers?
The only problem with such an outlook on this or any other cognitive problem is of course that it depends on each particular brain's wiring. With therapeutic intervention, hypnosis, etc it is different in each case, and one technique, piece of advice , or medication will not work noticeably for all who are effected by it.

Thank you for reminding me ❤
A PURE LIBERAL SOCIALIST OUTLOOK
Unless u gotta gold digger
What cured my self consciousness was the realization that everyone is only focused on themselves and not on me. Insouciance is universal.
I agree to some degree, But you don't just try to talk to anybody.

As one repeats the mantra "I", the pain ( P ) may increase temporarily due to the ego’s resistance to self-inquiry and the dissolution of its identity. This manifests as existential fear, anxiety, and discomfort.

However, as the practice continues, there is a transition where ( I ) begins to dissolve. This can be expressed mathematically as:
– Let ( D ) represent dissolution. The relationship can be modeled as:

Most have lost the art of hospitality… even I need to try better
Does anyone else see the filter?
You’re not tricking me Jordan. This is obviously AI generated
What the flip is this video? Is it full AI or a filter that makes you appear AI. Either way, it's freakish.
🙏❤️🙇
People have entertained angels at unawares being hospitable.

Thank you.
Hospitality is the virtue that changed Abraham's story.
Sounds to me like not fixing it at the root cause, and therefore not the best way
I really need it this! Thank you Mr.Peterson❤
I do concur my good man, i do concur.
Thank you for your point of view on this issue. It is good to know that it is a part of being mature. (A mark of high character).
